"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."-Michelangelo

She flickers and turns
flames becoming her skin
bending and twisting,
welcoming everything in.
She is spark
flame burst into Fire
sparkling and lovely
full of contentment and desire.
He wanders and floats
his skin palest white
searching and overpowering
with his blinding, beautiful light.
He is Ice
so warm and yet so cold
ever-watching and restless
as the world around him grows old.
They've seen each other
from afar
knowing each to be the other's doom
yet they wonder what they are.
Dangerously close,
each in a trance
they meet, fringing the other
and begin their final dance.
Ice,restless,
casts his cold spell
in her arms of flame
it was his own pleasurable hell.
Fire, undaunted when kindled
will not bend to any master
though she gasps at his touch,
she dances faster and faster.
Ice holds fast still
though Fire bends and turns
he imposes his stone-clad will
she weakens;strikes him with burns.
Both are students,unwilling for teaching
impassioned lovers out of each other's reaching.
Ice climbs higher
making Fire grow small
thinking of victory,
that's not it at all.
Fire,though smaller,
burns all the more hot
wishing he would release her
but part of her would rather not.
The two become the tides
flowing in and out
providing what they are missing
that neither know about.
Try as hard as they might
from one to the other,
victory is never wrenched
to this day they continue their dance.
They've come together, neither melted nor quenched.

This is loosely based off of two characters from The Books of Pellinor; the main character Maerad and the being Arkan, also called the Winterking.

Thanks! This was a bit difficult to write, but I'm glad their battle of wills shines through.

“If you are a dreamer come in
If you are a dreamer a wisher a liar
A hoper a pray-er a magic-bean-buyer
If youre a pretender com sit by my fire
For we have some flax golden tales to spin
Come in!
Come in!"
Shel Silverstein
