Boundaries Crossed

I’ll never forget it, that warm September day
I was trying in vain to find my way to geography class, and about to admit defeat
Then I saw you down the hall, walking my way
And for some reason unknown to my narrow teenage mind, my face and neck began to burn; my heart appeared to skip a beat.

The closer you came to where I stood; the cavalry inside my chest began to drum
Where once I had a mind existed only a blank slate and where my voice had been might as well have been made of lead
For when you walked past, my whole being was struck dumb
And all I wanted to do was fall down dead.

As the weary months drew on
My ever vulnerable heart began to tear
For the day you saw her, your mind spun out of control and in a flash was gone
And every time by you her face was glimpsed, not even Portia could appear as fair.

My slightly rebellious tomboy image, which I was aware of all too well
Could not compete with the girl that made your eyes so often glaze
I told myself I was stupid, the way I so easily fell
This intense longing was probably nothing but a phase.

The year went by and again it came, that warm September day
I had long accepted the fact that you to popularity I had lost
Then, almost like déjà vu I saw you down the hall, walking my way
But instead of moving past; you stopped and asked my name, and in that one moment I knew boundaries we had crossed.
