I glared as he stepped

One step, then another.

Slowly on as he crept

Nothing did he bother.

Once eyes had we met

A great smile was formed.

I never could forget

How fastly I was warmed.

For the night air was cold,

The sea blowing fast.

But soon I had a hold

Of his hand that he cast.

I stepped out from the dock

One step, then another.

His grasp a firm rock,

One step, then another.

He kept by my side

One step, then another.

With high and low tide

His grip didn't falter.

But then came a crash!

A mean looking wave.

It’s friends all went clash!

No longer was I brave.

I let go of his hand

My heart filled with worry.

I no longer felt grand,

And the more I was sorry.

Let go, yes I did

Of his warm loving hand.

Under waves then I hid

I could no longer stand.

They pulled me down quickly

Not missing their chance

I began to feel sickly,

My lungs without expanse.

But then came a grasp,

The same as before

A very strong clasp

And I longed then for more.

He pulled me up fast

Breath again now I did.

I felt his gaze cast

And my face then I hid.

But he lifted my chin

And smiled at me.

I gave a shy grin

I’m forgiven, I now see.

We continued to talk

Side by side, together.

Forever we did walk,

through that cold and stormy weather.

And now, here’s the end

Today I tell you brother

When he comes to be your friend,

Take one step, then another.
