Ode to Uruguay, my Country

I
The one who gave me an identity,
A way to live, a culture.
The trunk to my tree;
The heart inside of me.
Giving me aloe, mint, and sage for my health;
Not a shelter, but a home.
The blue to the jay
The brightness to my day.
“River of the Painted Birds”
The essence of the unknown South.

II
Responsible for my hefty hugs and kisses,
My perspective, how I see.
Where only the truth lies,
It is the home of the wise.
A homemade asado every Sunday;
Home of Dulce de Leche.
Cerulean sky,
You see the pirincho fly.
“River of the Painted Birds”
The essence of the hidden South.

III
A community that concentrates on farming.
Rural, as our mate.
Drinking fresh cow’s milk
As pure and white as silk.
Mindful fishing, riding, being myself.
Psychologist, my farm is
Creates a clam, relaxed mind,
That can even see blind.
“River of the Painted Birds”
The essence of the peaceful South.

IV
Everyone recognized each other,
An issue of this country.
That's how I grew up,
Like a fly in a full cup.
They're not just people, but my family;
Not my body, but my mind.
The picture to the frame;
Like oxygen and a flame.
“River of the Painted Birds”
The essence of the loving South.

The author's comments:

I wrote this ode trying to make people understand the way I feel about Uruguay. The United States is an enormous country; physically large, very populated, and sometimes, not very united. In Uruguay, the population barely reaches 3.5 million people. There are two main cities and the rest of the land are farms. It is a very close community, were everyone is related and knows each other. We all have the same customs and core values, and we all have this Uruguayan pride that surpasses everything.
