Honestly, I don't want to go home,
But anything's better than being alone.
Push her to the edge till it all falls down.
They say everything will come back around.
When the truth's too big, it becomes a secret;
The longer you keep it, the harder it gets.
If I lie and say we were just messing around,
The record repeats throwing down the same sounds.
She was afraid, and I wasn't brave.
It was a joke, but she wasn’t safe.
Now that she’s gone, everything’s changed.
Nothing about our school is the same.
I wish I never posted anything ever.
Maybe she wouldn’t be gone forever.
My life has entered a downward spiral
Now that her story is #Viral.

This slam poem of sorts was inspired by a one-act play written by Maria McConville called #Viral. The poem is written from the perspective of one of girls in the play. To offer a brief summary, the play is about a group of girls who take a joke too far and end up ruining their friend's life. She is humiliated once the story goes viral on social media and leaves the school. The girl is never heard from again, and as much as her friends try to defend themselves, they realize how wrong it was of them to do what they did. Cyberbullying is a real issue that affects more people than you would think. There are many victims out there who have suffered the dangerous consequences of social media, so I'd like to bring awareness to that. I hope you enjoy this piece. <3
