Father
And I remember
I asked
Won't the smoke hurt the doggy, daddy?
And you said
Yes
That you forgot
You put the cigarette out
But not because of the dog
Because your fatherly instincts
For once
Kicked in
You realized the smoke
Was not good for my lungs either
And it hurt your lungs
To think about
You felt guilty
But not even an hour later
Another lie was held between your fingers
And another small bit of my hope for you
Was lost
