Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.- William Shakespeare

A spiteful storm surrounds the sun.
The thunderous war shall cease the still.
At last, the lingering light has won.

When lightning strikes, all’s left undone.
The strong abandoned with only their will.
A spiteful storm surrounds the sun.

Relish the dawn when all is unspun;
Pray for the day when there’s love to instill.
At last, the lingering light has won.

No one can condone your request to rerun.
A heartfelt prayer will never distill,
That spiteful storm that surrounds the sun.

When conflict is stifled, and all is done.
The darkness emits a cry so shrill.
At last, the lingering light has won.

A bout will boil; war has already begun,
The sole remedy, a purpose to fulfil.
A spiteful storm surrounds the sun.
At last, the lingering light has won.

On February 3rd 2018, my mother's best friend passed away after a decade long struggle with huntington's disease. However, instead of dreading her incurable and fatal illness, she lived her life in the moment. In her 20s, in order to live her life to the fullest, she did everything that she could to be happy. She climbed Mt. Everest, she biked across Africa, and she even wrote her own book. I wrote this villanelle looking back on her life and her struggles. She inspired and continues to amaze me, teaching me how to see my own life. She has taught me that there is an immense amount of struggle in life, however, it is important to remember that at the end of the day, the sun comes out from behind the clouds and so must we; no matter how small, there is always a moment of ephemeral seredipity.
