The Hook

March 21, 2009

i'm cut bit by bit
by words
lectures
and praises
your words
are knives, thrown through my skin
your lectures
are bullets, piercing my brain
and your praises
are daggers, stopping the beat of my heart
i'm bruised beneath my skin everyday
by everyone
but you know what?
i punish myself more than you'll ever know
i internally put myself down
but little by little
i've decided to
forgive myself
day by day
until today
because today is the day that I'll let myself
off of the proverbial
hook
and today
you too will let me off of the
hook

The author's comments:
"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." Was there ever a time when this actually was true? I didn't think so. People that you love and people that you hate have all said cruel thing to you. And you know what? You've also said cruel things to yourself. This poem is about hurtful words and forgiving yourself. It's also about others forgiving you and drawing painful things to and end. Enjoy!
