We stuffed into the ship, barely any room to breathe, our new life ahead of us, we were almost free
Tickets in hand, all with the same plan, to start our new life in the new land
There were Families on the ship just like Mom and I
We were all on the deck, staring at the Sky
We knew life would be hard in this new country
But we did not care, though we were scared we are the Refugees

The ship was big and full of people from my country
They decided to leave just like me and we were all considered lucky
I was five years old and wasn’t told about what lied ahead of me
But I do remember hearing about a lady named Liberty
Were We Scared? Well, No one cared, We were now Refugees

Two weeks later a bird was spotted and we were almost there
At that moment, I started to get a little scared
Then I saw a lady wearing green, they told me she was Liberty
I screamed “Hello” but didn’t know what she would eventually mean to me
We were proud to be Refugees

The Ship was Docked
We suddenly stopped, tears in our eyes
We Were safe now, war no more, we let out a grateful cry
We went through Immigration, An American Lady stared down at me, she renamed me Julie
A real Refugee

I grew up in this country my mother working hard,
She got a job one day, eventually getting us a home with a front and back yard
I got to start school and learned the rules of the language that was new to me
We then had career day and I learned of all the things I could be
I fit right in, and I could see I could be more than a Refugee

Around came Highschool Graduation
I was a proud adult in this fine Nation
Off to Yale University
To learn how to help people in Poverty
What a successful girl I’ll be
From Yours Truly, Refugee
