It was on that cold January morning that your heart stopped.
Your heart stopped, and everyone did too.
You left this world;
The world kept turning.

They recounted memories of your laughter and smile
Of the faces you could make, or the stories you told.
We all remembered;
The world kept turning,

There have been ceremonies, and benefits.
T-shirt and bracelet sales,
We kept remembering,
And the world kept turning.

The seasons have changed along with everyone else.
But there are moments when it hits-
Someone will have your laugh, or a smile like yours.
I still remember.
The world keeps turning.

For english, my class had an assignment to write an elegy mourning the death of someone. My friend Amanda passed away on January 17, 2009, due to carbon monoxide poisoning. This poem is dedicated to her memory. For more information on carbon monoxide poisoning, go to http://www.carbonmonoxidekills.com/
