Always Shows

Smiles and curls but she still knows,
Her eyes betray her,
It always shows.
Few have the capacity to see,
The courage to ask.

The pain every second lingers,
She touches her arm with tender fingers.
To everyone else the bruises long faded,
But still when memories stir,
Her eyes turn somber,
Heart rate accelerated…

The adrenaline rushes back,
The aloneness. The anger.
The little one cries,
He feels her sorrow.

She absorbs it again,
In her heart until tomorrow,
The day after,
Then the day after that…
