The New Year
so we rang in a new year with a phone call.
across miles of open freeway,
with unused rest stops every 60 miles or so.
we drank too much and yelled out numbers,
that decreased and fell into midnight.
then it dropped.
fresh things exploded into the air and floated about the room,
breathing newness into our lungs.
the hands of the clock held each other routinely for a minute,
before going their separate ways,
saying "see you in an hour or so."
