i see a lot of things
a lot more than any of you
i see a lot of strangeness
in my special point of view

girls hold up their cell phones,
cameras pointed straight at me.
taking several pointless pictures,
i hear they’re called ‘selfies.’

boys are equally as vain,
they flex their biceps, shoulders square.
seemingly trying to make up for
what isn’t really there.

but sometimes i see other things,
whether it’s a he or a she.
more commonly i see stares,
critical of whatever they see.

i see a lot of things,
things not many people do.
but whenever you look at me
all you ever see is you.

The author's comments:

when given the prompt to write a poem from the perspective of an inanimate object, i thought to write about something that sees us without us noticing despite our daily use of it. therefore, a poem from the perspective of a mirror seemed most fitting.
