Beginning and End
First it was the text. Then it was the call. Denial. Denial. It couldn’t be true at all. The heavy boots sound. Knock. Knock. Knock.Knock. “It’s the police. Open up!” Eyes closed. We wished not to hear a sound. “We’ll look,” they said. “We’ll try,” they said. Door shuts again, so we wait instead. Tick. Tock. Tick Tock. Minutes of silence pass. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. How long will this last? Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The phone finally rings. “I’m sorry sir,” we hear him say. So this is how it’s going to be. Silence. Silence. Silence. Silence. Tears now hit the ground. Beginning, end, beginning, end. The world stopped going round. I had to leave, I couldn’t take it, I had to let them grieve. This is the beginning of the journey, not the end, for some of us indeed.
