The Plight of the Warrior
The crack of dawn, a brand new day
Uncertain of the future, but facing it anyway
The warrior dons his gear and walks outside
Sounds of war never seeming to subside
He can't make himself face the enemy again
After seeing so many brothers slain
Flying bullets, flaring guns
Over the ramparts the enemy runs
Overwhelmed they have to flee
Each man praying that they won't chase me
Jumping out of bed the soldier wakes
No enemy soldiers there to face
These dreams they haunt him constantly
Faces of the past he always sees
PTSD the doctors say
A condition he lives with day after day
He thought it was over when he left the war
He never dreamed it would follow him home

I was inspired to write this piece after years of listening to my grandfather tell stories of the terrible things he'd seen during World War II, and seeing the effect that they had on him. My goal with this piece is to spread awareness of the continuing struggles that our soldiers and veterans face.
