"To thine own self be true."

I wrote a letter to the president but I did not send it.
Instead I wrote to Jesus and I know He listened.
I asked Him to guide President Obama;
To give him the strength and wisdom to endure all the drama.
I prayed that our future would be better than our past.
I prayed that all this war and economic demise would not last.

'Jesus,' I said, 'show me who my heritage makes me.'
He held my hand and said 'Take a look and see.'
I saw the bus Rosa sat on,
the blood shed by Martin.
I saw inventions and advances all made by our men.
Then when I thought I'd seen all I could see,
the Lord showed me a mirror and I saw me.

He said 'Look at yourself, you beautiful black girl.'
I said 'What's so beautiful about being black in a white world?'
'You're all my people.' That's what he said.
'Black, white, green, blue, yellow, and red.'
'So you love us all the same? That's what you're saying?'
'Well I'm listening to this prayer and all the prayers they're praying.'
'I trust you, Lord. I believe your words are true.'
'Then stand on your faith and I'll work it out for you.'
