The hummingbird sings.
Car wheels skid, and a heavy metal carcass slides across black ice.
Children scream.
The hummingbird sings.
A trigger clicks, a bullet whizzes through dense air,
a gunshot booms, a grown man cries.
The hummingbird sings.
Lightning crackles, the tall tree crashes to the ground,
pulling sparking wires with it.
The hummingbird flies to another tree, finds its perch,
and begins to sing again.
