New Gray Sweater
On a cold October night
driving back home as we shivered in the cold you offered me your new gray sweater
I fell asleep on your shoulder as the oversize sleeves whispered pretty things to my heart
The next few days i was walking on air, the proud new owner of a potential relationship
there were so many times you could have said it
so many times I thought there would be fireworks to light
up my dismal, lonely life
they never came
you took back your feelings and
I kept your new gray sweater because unlike you I could whisper things at night and it wouldn't judge or say anything back
it gave me a warm hug and i made believe it was your strong thin arms embracing me
Now when you say hi and ask how my day was I wanna throw it all back in a kind, sultry rage but of course I keep my mouth shut as a jumble of BS comes pouring out like rain on a gray April morning
Deep down you'll never know that all this time the girl you put back on the shelf is still patiently waiting until you decide to bring her down again
so until you mend my broken heart I will keep
Your not-so-new gray sweater
