When Can I Stop Loving?

January 21, 2009
By Jarred Sleets, Baltimore, MD

You punch my face
You break my nose
You fracture my jaw
And yet, I love you.

You break my arm with a bat
You gash my leg with a knife
You shoot my back with a BB gun
And still, I love you.

You throw insults
Like you throw darts
You cause pain
Like you smoke cigarettes
And even now, I love you.

You hurt because you are hurt
I cry because you cannot.

I don’t love for who you’ve become
For those are thunderous storms
I love for the memories you were
For those were still waters

I don’t cry for me
Because I know my path
I cry for you
Because you aren’t on it
