Every night I used to cry
Above the grass and beneath the sky
Over you, it was just a lie
But now I know what’s wrong and what’s right

You hurt me once but you won’t hurt me again
You took my heart and stabbed it with a pen
But today I’ve found a love that’s real
No, you won’t hurt me again

Why can’t you see?
You’ve got nothing to gain by hurting me
You did it once but never more
Because I’ve shoved you out the door
Of my heart

Today my head is held up high
You’ve taught me more than you could’ve tried
Thank you for ripping the heart once mine
Because free of you I can finally fly

You've got the spirit of a champ, the fire of a lamp
But you sent me rolling down a ramp
What was once warm is now cold and damp
And you liked it, finished it, licked the stamp

Understand I was like a bird in flight
And you were like a stone with might
You brought me down, you gripped me tight
But now I’m reaching out, toward the light

You hurt me once but you won’t hurt me again
You took my heart and stabbed it with a pen
But today I’ve found a love that’s real
No, you won’t hurt me again

Why can’t you see?
You’ve got nothing to gain by hurting me
You did it once but never more
Because I’ve shoved you out the door
Of my heart
