Lately I’ve been visiting

My nighttime city.
I’ve become so weary
Of daytime monotony

-

In the city
You’re alone.
And normality
Here is not condoned

-

The city is my remedy
An escape from bland reality
The air here hums with energy
It is only here
That I have clarity

-

The creatures here
Are single-horned
In other words,
They’re unicorns

-

You can call to them
Only in low tones
If you want a ride
On the road of cobblestone

-

If you follow this road
Of cobblestone
Look to your left
Where the grasses grow

-

A sleepy mist crawls
Over a lagoon so crystalline
You can rest at the bank
Where the sand is fine

-

Continue along
See the glowing willow tree
A host for flowering vines
So here the air is sweet

-

Stars are bright
Here in The Nighttime City
Emitting rosy light
They look so pretty.

-

The horizon is pulsing
With a muted golden glow
You ride towards it alone
On the road of cobblestone.

-

The road is lined with cypress
Try not to touch the trees
Their branches secrete a poison
The pain starts at the knees

-

Be careful not to rub your eyes
Remember the sand that was so fine?
It was actually dust of fiberglass
The sight of bleeding sky above you
May be your last

-

I said the stars emitted a pretty rosy light
But that shade of red
Isn’t right
Truthfully, they appear to be quite scary
The color isn’t rose
It’s bloody cherry

-

“You’re here alone”
Is what I’ve been repeating
Did you think it was true?
Well it’s not
I was lying

-

You stumbled into my web
And I have a craving
You’ve stayed a little too long
Now tonight you won’t be leaving

-

The incredulity on your face is a disappointment
How did you not see the acid-fog machine installment?
It isn’t even water in that “crystalline lagoon”
I wouldn’t light a match near there
If I were you

-

I can see that I’m scaring you
So let’s play a game
I’m not that insane
You have an opportunity to escape

-

I’ve hidden a chest
That contains a key
Which unlocks the exit
From The Nighttime City

-

Ah, you’ve found the chest
It was hidden in the thorns
Were you expecting
It to be full of flayed unicorns?

-

This has been fun
But I think it’s about time
That I make you a noose
With the thick sickly-sweet flowering vines

-

The Nighttime City is quiet
Again I am alone
And I have a new skull
In my road of cobbled bones

-

The horizon glows
With a jaundiced light
This city is sick
And it’s in my mind.
