We came to see you in your day bed,
The place you slept and were fed
Your whole life through.
You did not want to have a thing with
Reading words that meant that
You could be fine.
Your cold hands shook at us with anger
To make us feel in danger,
To leave you alone.
You shut us out the door with your words
Condemned us for being forwards,
So we obeyed you.
Our backs faced the frame that held your hope
The one we tried to evoke-
But you couldn’t feel.
The dates flew and we hadn’t heard from you,
So we burrowed in our pew
To see things through,
Your bed clothes strangely felt as soft as
The smoothness of you skin when
You were clothed in white,
Your golden cheeks gleamed a pleasant grin when
We entered your warm den.
You found your threshold.
Your lips had rouged into a joyful red,
Eyed bright enough to burn the dead,
We took a double look
They placed the coins on top of your eyes.
We found your book of heavenly skies
Open at your bedside.
We found your book of heavenly skies.
We placed his golden pages in your hands.
We found your book of heavenly skies.
We placed his golden pages in your hands.
You accepted him.
