Empty Daydream

By , Riverside, RI
rain tuesday morning
my ma’s driving me to school
that’s when we see him
ma says, “sweetie, you’re a fool.”

“why do you say that?”
she says, “look at him, sweetie!”
how could you let him go?”
i say, “ma, just let me be.”

she sighs, “i will, but you know...
...that he’s the one who got away.”
i say, “ma, i know;
you don’t ven have to say.”

in school, i stand at the door
seven o’clock tuesday morning
just watching you play piano
how are you so amazing?

i don’t say anything
i know i’m out of it today
and you’re just too amazing
for me to understand anyway

you’re just too good for me
do you even realize
will you ever know
what i see when i look in your eyes

how do you do it
how do you always find a way
to give me a smile
to be the best part of my day

but somehow you don’t see it
do you even know
will you ever know
will you ever say so

but i know, i know
and at the end of it all
if it ends up you and me
i can only hope that’s where we will fall

but if all you are is
if all you end up to be
is an empty daydream
never a reality

if you are just
a fairy tale in my head
a story never told
something that is never said

promise me something
promise me you’ll always be
the amazing person you are
please promise that to me
