rain tuesday morning
my ma’s driving me to school
that’s when we see him
ma says, “sweetie, you’re a fool.”

“why do you say that?”
she says, “look at him, sweetie!”
how could you let him go?”
i say, “ma, just let me be.”

she sighs, “i will, but you know...
...that he’s the one who got away.”
i say, “ma, i know;
you don’t ven have to say.”

in school, i stand at the door
seven o’clock tuesday morning
just watching you play piano
how are you so amazing?

i know i’m out of it today
