The American Dream
A dream dedicated to achieving that all mighty green
A dream, which one man will achieve by any means,
I heard he was an Oxford man.
In West Egg there were extravagant parties thrown every night
In the Valley of Ashes a woman was left lying dead under a streetlight
They cried…
They lied…
He will ultimately die…
Trying to rewrite time in an attempt to achieve that American Dream.
A poor man’s inability to provide the finer things
Results in his wife going off on an unsavory fling
O that American Dream!
A rich man going to a fro from his wife to his mistress
Lost and looking into the affairs of his wife’s lovers mischief
O that rich American Dream!
So elusive to us all
O that American Dream.
In a swindling voice and a suave tone
I heard him plea, I heard her moan
“I was searching, and have finally found you,
I was searching, and now I can finally love you
I am once again fulfilled and wish I had never left”
Crash, crash, crash went the time on the floor
He spoke a little bit more then suddenly her groans turned into words,
“I have a tender curiosity, and am just looking for pure pleasure
I have a tender curiosity, and am just looking for pure pleasure
I am not in love with you and wish you simply had clue”
And far into the night she moaned and he swooned
The parties were over and his life would end soon.
All in pursuit of fulfillment and the American dream.

This was a poem I wriote in English class relating to jazz poetry in the 1920s and The Great Gatsby.  I was inspired by Langston Hughe's jazz poem They Weary Blues.
