The Lifeless Shell
The feeling changes you, it doesn’t ask to stay, it knows it can.
It doesn’t ask for much, it gives everything and asks only that you use it all
It doesn’t beat away at the lifeless shell it was given
It doesn’t force it’s way in, instead it puts one foot in front of the other
It walks lightly, testing the ground
It turns nightmares into dreams
And fears become so light they float in the breeze
And you reach up to touch them but they’re already gone.
The feeling will leave, it will be asked to stay
But your voice is nothing when it talks that way.
The feeling will leave, it will be asked to stay
But things don’t always end this way.
And it leaves so fast
It was never even there
Your fingers outstretched, grabbing at air.
You lay down to think
Your head is heavy when your mind is empty.
The feeling changes you, it doesn’t ask to stay, it knows it will.
It gives you so little, and you ask for so much
But you let it in, and these feelings have risen
When it beats away at the lifeless shell it was given.

I feel as though many people believe that every once in a while, the body they are trapped in becomes not a body, but an object. A shell. I wrote this piece because I believe it is important to grasp everything, but to also let go.
