Double Sided Mirror

December 11, 2008
By Anonymous

You look into my eyes,
And I into yours and I smile
Just as sweetly as you do
And I stare back
Just as you do.

My happiness pleases you,
And you see it in my face,
The joy I get from your smile,
My face
A mirror of your own pleasure.

But you don't see that its just that,
You don't see the mirror I hold before me,
Between us.
How my smile is nothing more than yours,
A shallow reflection of you
Used to hide me.
How the mirror I hold hides the truth,
The bitter melancholy that is my life.

And I hold up this mirror for all to see as they please,
To see their own smiling faces look back at them
So they can move on thinking they did good,
And I can stay back and see ghe truth
Because this mirror is double sided.

The author's comments:
This is to anyone who has ever put on a false smile just to make life go smoother. I've been that person, and it's come back to haunt me. The truth may hurt for a moment, but that masquerade of smiles hurts the most.

Aww, I love this! I was a bit confused as to what you were talking about in the beginning but the double-sided mirror analogy is just great. Love the stong ending (:

Sorry, I typed it up on wordpad and didn't notice my typo,

"And I can stay back and see the truth

Because this mirror is double sided."

Hope if this hits the magazine they fix that for me!
