My name is Asher Lev,
my dream is to see,
and brush the world into one canvas,
and to be loved, and loved by me.

In my hands, the mind, and soul,
I try to fetch what ideas I create,
To paint the world in sorrow and health,
The paintings, my paintings, to be straight.

However more, my dreams denied,
in family, friends, the religion,
so cruel, is my dream denied,
my world, broken into one strong decision.

I haven’t the interest to worship,
to pray in Allah’s behalf,
I stand in my land, attached by my root,
to paint, create, and laugh.

The author's comments:
this poem is based on a story called My Name is Asher Lev, a jewish boy who wants to become a painter, but his religion doesn't allow it. His family and friends throw him out and he learns to live alone and to what he loves to do the most: paint.
