The plane just landed.
I am filled with apprehension as I wait impatiently to leave the stuffy aircraft.
While I wait, my mind races with memories of good times.
Tanning at the pool.
Passing notes in class.
My surprise going away party.
UNO during lunch.
Nothing can calm me down at this moment, just as nothing can stop my tears when I leave.
I walk off the plane.
It’s happening.
I’m finally going to see her again.
I re-read the text, “Meet me at baggage claim!”
I walk swiftly down the escalators—then I see her.
In her pink t-shirt and blonde hair she is exactly as I remember her.
We race towards each other for the big embrace.
She is my best friend, my sister, my something out of nothing.
We squeeze each other until we both can’t breathe.
A hurricane brought us together, but it would take something much stronger to tear us apart.

The author's comments:
This poem is based off a very special friendship I made when I was relocated to North Carolina after hurricane Katrina. I moved back to my hometown, but my friend and I still keep in touch and visit each other during the summer. I had a great experience in the midst of diasaster and I truly have my friend to thank for that.
