Response to a painting

Devil’s face staring out of dark eyes,
None know what their warmth disguise.

Gaunt cheeks, for all the hunger to others he sent,
Or for the hours, over student’s desks, he spent.

Silver beard, for the dagger twist in the back,
Or from years teaching those who had the knack.

Sharp ears, for the Demon inside,
Or for a fatherly creed he abides.

Deathly pale skin, for years spent fearing the sun,
Or for the tired old soul, who’s had a long run.
