You smile, I laugh
And we both hide how we feel
Yet at night we lay awake
Staring at the empty dark
I know it's true
I've never felt like this before
There must be something there
I wish, I hope!

But days and years drive us apart
And you're sure of what I mean
Your sharp intake of breath;
A fleeting glance is all I dare
This'll be enough, it just has to be enough
To get me through today
I turn the corner, stop, and sigh;
knowing we can never be

The author's comments:
This was actually inspired by someone I used to like, and though I am ashamed of the crush now, I still view this as one of my favorite pieces. The only thing that might make this make more sense is that there was an age gap between the two of us.
