Waiting for Rain
The exhaling wind brought the scent of hovering rain,
but the night was as clear as a summer day.
Not a drop had splashed at my waiting feet,
and, hopeless, I thought this was how it would stay.
Hair whipped 'round my face while the wind blew once more,
and empty music twisted and entwined into my drifting thoughts.
I looked, stone-faced back abroad the mountain side,
as I thought of what childish dreams I had wrought.
My wondering gaze shifted once more to the stars overhead,
praying for rain the parched earth only dreamed of.
Praying for strength to face my pending fears
and thinking all was lost to the few keeping watch above.
My strength would come with the water, pouring down.
Having a hopeful heart, I had waited forever; but all in vain.
Then, the wind passing by stooped and brought me a sweet taste of peace
and with comfort now filling my heart, fell the very first drop of rain.
