a biologist’s symphony of thought

i examine my fingertips
swirls of whimsical fancy
delicate designs unique to me
feeling their way through a tactile universe

i taste the air our atmosphere provides
my lungs hungrily accepting the offering of gases
and diligently extracting
that essential oxygen

my eyes dart back in forth
gathering information for my impatient brain
processing our world’s jumble of light and dark hues
guiding my actions and reactions

i feel my pulse
the thumbing utterance of life
gushing red fluids
quenching my cells’ every need

my brain accepts this
but can merely attempt
to comprehend the mysterious elegance of
the delicate systems of my human body
