The Box

There is a box that’s always here,
and I don’t understand
why school locks me inside it
just to reprimand.
What a stupid box.

They take the key, and throw it out,
place me in a desk.
And sometimes let me peek outside
but take away the rest.
What a stupid box.

I’m a mind that has to be
told to think “inside”.
But when I’m under authority
they strip me of my pride.
What a stupid box.

Inside, outside, up and down
the walls are closing in.
I’m slowly losing ability
to be myself again.
What a stupid box.

How can children learn to be
different from the rest,
when they are told to walk a line
without their thoughts expressed?
What a stupid box.
