"Better three hours too soon than a minute too late" - William Shakespeare

I had a dream the other night
Of the day when I first saw my light.
She could wound me with her eyes,
Set me on fire, engulf my heart.
Oh, the flames, oh how they would grow.
How they left me burning in the embrace of sleep.

So tired, I had felt, yet I could not sleep
For she kept me up late at night
With an idea. The idea that we could grow
Old together, now and forever. She brought me light
When times were dark, she filled the void inside my heart,
She let me see the world through her eyes.

In the night, the stormy night, she’d close her eyes,
To another world, she took me, when I wasn’t even asleep,
To paradise. What my own eyes couldn’t see, my heart
Did. Then on one violet night,
Nothing but stars and moonlight,
I took her to the place where the hyacinths grow

And I fell, took a gem from where the gems grow
And I told her, as I wiped tears from her eyes,
That I wanted to save that light
That changed me. Still in sleep
I must have been, dreaming in the music of the night,
For she gave to me the desires of my heart.

Alas, now it is empty in the valley of my heart.
But for the pool of tears that grow
As I bleed out in the misery of the night.
I look to her, for those eyes,
But she ran away in her sleep;
She took with her my light.

Gasping for air, my breaths too grow light,
Fading, as a thousand silhouettes dance heavy on my heart.
Lost, darkness becomes me as I look for her in sleep.
I see my gem everyday when I go to where the hyacinths grow.
I see her silhouette every time I close my eyes
It’s in the faintest cry of the night.

The shadows on my walls don’t sleep, taunting me with their blank eyes
Thieves of my light. But even the devil may cry at the end of the night
For from the corpses, flowers grow, grow heavy on my heart.

I wrote this sestina for a homework assignment, and I thought I might share it… Sestinas are pretty tough so I did my best haha. I'd love to get some feedback too!
