Assassin of the Woods

In the dark foliage,
behind the house.
Something is there,
Watching…
Waiting…

Waiting there motionless,
like a part of the woods.
Ready to charge.
Ready to pounce.

It eyes its prey.
Crouched in position,
Watching…
Waiting…

Suddenly there is movement,
chaotic but brief.
Bringing the woods alive,
just for a moment.

Out comes a cat,
dirty and wet.
Bringing a robin,
to his best friend.

Down goes the robin,
right at my feet.
A present for me,
“How thoughtful”, I think.

Tweeting no more,
its song of joy.
The bird on the ground,
limp as can be.

Back into the woods,
the little lion ventures.
On the prowl once again,
Watching…
Waiting…
