A World We Wish We Didn't Know
It’s hard to grow up, even harder than they say
but they say it’s the same regardless of age
that everyone goes through similar situations
but it’s hard for them to see the gap in generations
you see for those of us with broken homes
our reality is something you’ll never know
fathers who hit, mothers who leave
while their gifts to earth must escape to the streets
bleeding and wounded, taking refuge in the shadows
the darkness takes place, makes them feel like they matter
it’s a sinister lie, one that doesn’t let go
and it’s victims, we know, will never get back home
the reality’s harsh, old men shake their heads
reminiscing on the times before their mothers were dead
a time to laugh, where promises were kept
a time when our words didn’t leave us in debt
it’s difficult to get through these times so hard
our souls suffering, so wounded and marred
but I will fight for my heart, yes I’ll stand toe-to-toe
as I embark on my life through a world we wish we didn’t know
