Good-bye

July 31, 2008

Ashes to Ashes,
Dust to dust,
Another innocent life is killed,
Now do you gain their trust!

This world is the definition,
Of anger and hate.
I fight for peace,
For I know that is my fate.

Good-bye my child,
Good-bye my wife.
I have fled from our home,
I have fled from our life.

Your pictures I carry in my pocket,
Your voices I hear inside my head.
Our memories together,
Have not yet fled.

The constant shooting and cries,
Have defend my ears.
I have chosen this life,
I have faced my fears!

I fight for freedom,
For both you and me.
Yet still they protest,
Because of soldiers like me.

Christmas day is not the same,
No child to see or wife to kiss.
I am sorry child, I am sorry wife,
My heart aches, for our family I miss.

Your pictures have become burnt and crumpled,
Your voices have defend and silence takes it place.
I have forgotten,
My own child’s and wife’s face.

Please understand,
The choices I have made.
My child will never have a father,
And my wife’s memory of me will fade.

Ashes to ashes,
Dust to dust,
Another innocent life is killed,
Now do you gain my trust?

The author's comments:
I dedicate this poem to all of the soldiers, including both my grandfathers, who risk their lives to help us, to give us freedom. We are forever in your debt! My thanks, I know, are not enough. But I hope that I will be able to influence people and open their eyes to how grateful they should be, because I know I am! My grandfathers lived through war, even though one of them was shot. To Grampa Pece, and Grandpa Mismas! I love you and miss you, may you both rest in peace!
