He asked for her to let
him leave with me, to allow for us
To pack our bags and pass
From her life over
To the one we sought, for she was getting old. The
Wrinkles of her face, like forks of a river,
Had become all the more apparent and
Expressed her need to rest.

Her face fell slowly under
The weight of knowing the
Time had finally come for him to leave the shade
Of her protection and parenting. Of
Her kids, he was the
Last to burst from a sprout to one of her beloved trees.

This is a "found poem," or a poem where the last word in every line creates a sentence from a written piece of work. In this case, it creates the sentence from Margaret Junkin Preston’s line: "Let us pass over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees"
