"Writing is the socially acceptable form of schizophrenia." -E.L. Doctorow

I am shackled by the love you gave me
Now it stands, nothing exists but you dear
Alone with you, it does no good to plea

The mirage of candy glitter, I see
The resounding admonitions, I hear
I am shackled by the love you gave me.

Would I be so bad as to spurn ye:
Could I turn so frozen cold as to sneer?
Alone with you, it does no good to plea

I want, need, all I thought you promised me
Yet when good chains emerge, free fades out, less near
I am shackled by the love you gave me.

Even the captor knows; with this he’ll agree:
The sickly pale sheen in mine eyes gives fear
Alone with you, it does no good to plea

And now, harsh soft stares: what could be the key?
To find a remedy that does not sear
I am shackled by the love you gave me
Alone with you, it does no good to plea.
