Freedom

A new story discovered on each page
Traveling to distant lands
Knowing a character’s thoughts
That even I can understand

A place where shadows never lurk
And the wind dances through the trees
Freedom is as common as air
There is never struggle, only ease

Knock, knock goes the hand rapping at my door
Snapped back to reality like a rush of cold water
A solitary, imperious figure stands waiting
With rules that always require more

If false intimidation had a name
Mine would be found
Because underneath my spirit and soul
Refuse to burn out like a raw flame

My gloomy existence has never changed
A man always rules with no other choices
Confined to this life of nobility
Women have never had any voices

I am a caged bird
And society has always been my cage
Never any freedom for a woman
Only freedom in the turning of every page

As the pages flip back and forth
I can almost feel the sun’s soft rays
I can almost hear the laughter of the characters
Here, there is no one that I must obey

In this world, I am free as a bird
My choices, they are unlimited
My ruler, is myself and no one else
In this world, I am exhilarated

A new story discovered on each page
Traveling to distant lands
Knowing a character’s thoughts
That even I can understand

The painting, "Interrupted Reading", by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot inspired me to write this poem. I believe this poem has a voice and it spoke volumes to me.
