The Eagle

Eagle! Eagle! Reaching the sky
Repeat again your imploring cry,
What skilled craftsman could gently mold,
Thy glistening beak made of gold?

In what realm of cerulean air
Were thou given thy stark white hair?
And what powerful being of any size,
Would dare capture the gleam of thy fierce eyes?

And what might, & what strength,
Could envision such wings of magnificent length?
And once thy form was filled with life,
Was thy maker filled with strife?

The creator’s work thus complete,
Did he with joy his creature greet?
Was his mood one of celebration
When this beast became the symbol of a nation?

Eagle! Eagle! Reaching the sky
Repeat again your imploring cry,
What skilled craftsman could gently mold,
Thy glistening beak made of gold?
