Country Roads
Grandpa sits outside
On his favorite white metal chair
A hat on his head
(He always has a hat on)
Just relaxing
Feeding the squirrels
Sometimes he sits in his rocking chair inside
In his TV room
(Decorated with pictures that I drew him)
And rocks back and forth
To John Denver songs that filled the room
And bounce off the wall
In his workroom in the basement
He spends hours building cabins for our American Girl dolls
And constructing bird houses
The sign he posts above the stairs
Reads, “I love my 5 beautiful granddaughters”
(There are also a few crossed out numbers)
He tells stories about his life,
About serving in Korea,
About how he met Grandma,
About growing up in Wisconsin on a farm,
About his move to Chicago
He loves to fish
He loves cars
He loves his five beautiful granddaughters
So when Grandpas says, “Grandpa loves you”
What else can I do?
Except say back to him “I love you too”
