A stranger stabs you in the front; a friend stabs you in the back; a boyfriend stabs you in the heart, but best friends only poke each other with straws.

I ask myself, did you die?
As the tracks strapped you down
Covered your palms with ash
And laughed until you began to drown

I ask myself, should I worry?
As the wood began to splinter
Choked your words with dirt
And turned your skin to winter

I ask myself, should I save you?
As the nails tightened their hold
Squeezed your lungs shut with iron
And mocked the lies you told

I ask myself, what will I gain?
As the whistle begins to blow
Bundled your eyes with soot
And echoed your screams of woe

I ask myself, what do you deserve?
As the wheels created a stir
Held your body motionless
And smudged your features to blur

I ask myself, did you die?
As the engine crossed the forest pined
Converted your voice to dusk
And watched me leave you behind
