God

God,
I don’t know if you’re listening
Or if you’re even there
But I’m here to talk.
God,
I don’t know if I believe,
Or if I ever will.
I see people everyday
Who get on their knees and pray.
They pray for guidance,
Protection,
Love,
Forgiveness.
I know I don’t do this often God,
But I am here today.
I am not here to ask for your guidance,
Your protection,
Your love,
Or your forgiveness.
I just had to say
That I don’t know if I believe,
Or if I ever will,
But I know that this is okay.
If I doubt it’s only because it doesn’t make sense.
If I question it’s only because I don’t know the answer.
And if I don’t believe
It doesn’t mean
I’m going to hell,
It doesn’t mean
I don’t have a purpose,
All it means is that I am smart enough to know there is a question,
But not arrogant enough to think I know the answer.
So God, I just had to say
I’m an agnostic, and proud,
And I know that that is more than okay,
It's who I am.
It's me, and it's wonderfull.
And that's all I had to say.

Beautiful. The poem expresses perhaps the most important, yet most commonly forgotten, philosophy of our existence: if you stop questioning--if you throw away your position--it's all too easy to follow the crowd. I'm a teen, and I've always struggled with where to put my beliefs. Congratulations, you have the greatest gift of all. Not even a talent, really. An open mind.
