The Bird

He caught an enormously, tiny bird,
in a gigantic cage.
It was very,
very small,
with brown feathers,
and specks of tan.
This special bird,
was a Sparrow,
I'm sure.
It hopped
and hopped
back and forth
within the cage,
not able to fly away.
He didn't mean to catch
this tiny bird.
The cage wasn't meant
for that,
more mice,
than anything.
So this bird,
more frightened
than any creature
I've seen before,
looked at me,
as I knelt down
to its level.
I looked at this beautiful,
terrified animal,
and felt sorrow,
for it was trapped
and would surely die of starvation
if I did not help.
I would never,
ever be able to live with the guilt
of knowing I let this creature die
if I just walked away.
So I got down on the wet grass,
carefully and gently
opened this terrifying cage
and watched the beautiful creature
fly higher
and higher
up in the sky
until it reached
the highest point
of the tallest tree.
It was free,
only until the net day,
when I found the same
gorgeous bird
trapped,
in the same
ugly cage.
Only until
I set it free
once more.
