Gymnast of the Sea

March 18, 2008
By Madeleine Metcalf, Mount Kisco, NY

Bursting through the water into a silver arch,

twisting and turning to escape Posideon's grasp,

past rocks, sunken ships, and coral reefs,
speeding like a race car, tumbling through the air,

a gymnast of the sea,
a dolphin racing toward an unknown destination.

Flipping smooth, shiny flippers through the spray,

showing off tricks to nearby cruisers,

splashing over waves,

vanishing towards the horizon,

a mere speck of gray.
