Courage is not a lack of fear, it is acting despite the fear.

I’m in a world where people look at me
As a calm and peaceful sea;
They’re blind to the waves that crash inside
They don’t see the storm that I try to hide;
Everyone’s afraid of what they would find
If they dug too deep into my mind;
They stay outside all safe and sound
Because they’re scared of what might be found;
“If it’s ignored it will all go away”
It’s this to themselves they all do say;
I repeat this myself, over and again
But it’s a losing battle I can’t seem to win;
All my emotions, they go up and down
But I try not to cry, I try not to frown;
Life just gets harder, I know this is true
I just wish about my true feelings, someone had a clue;
But as I pass by some old forgotten friends
They ask how I’m doing, well that just depends;
They’re afraid of the truth, so I won’t cross that line
Instead I’ll just smile and reply “I’m doing fine.”
In this world where people view me
As this “calm and peaceful sea,”
I’ll show them what they want to be shown
But that sadly leaves me all alone.

The author's comments:
I was inspired to write this when I noticed the way old friends would pass each other in the store and say a quick "hi, how are you" not really waiting to see how the other person is rather than a quick "I'm good, you?" "I'm fine" and that was it. I always wondered what the other person would do if they responded differently.
