"We grew up with giant monsters, comic books, punk, science fiction, skateboarding, robots & rebellion. No one made what we wanted. So we made it ourselves."

- Anonymous, found on Tumblr on May 31, 2011

We were born into this world,
Having not been taught a thing.
Like a single blank sheet of paper,
As new as an engagement ring.

Within us our parents instilled,
All of their future hopes and dreams.
They tried their bests to raise us,
Tried protecting us from life’s extremes.

We were forced to go to school,
And at first it wasn’t so bad.
We got to climb on monkey bars,
We learned how to subtract and add.

All of a sudden, things started to change,
For reasons that didn’t make sense.
Kids were turning to drugs and alcohol,
They were committing a capital offense.

But it’s entirely ignorant to say,
That we were all the same.
Some of us had morals,
We chose not to play such an evil game.

Some of us were inspired,
And some of us were dedicated.
When the road blocks told us, “No,”
We told ourselves to stay motivated.

Some of us couldn’t be limited by our parents,
We couldn’t even be limited by our peers,
We couldn’t be stopped by anything,
We were to overcome all of our fears.

Now listen to all of our admirers,
Listen to what they say amongst themselves
They did not make us what we wanted,
So we decided to make it all ourselves.

The author's comments:
We grow up with these expectations that high school is going to be perfect. When we arrive at those front doors on the first day, we suddenly realize that it is not at all like we expected. Suddenly, we are being pressured to do things, such as drugs, and hang out with people our parents warned us about. This is for the people that are stuck between fitting in and making the right decision.
