His silverware slipped
In his sweaty palms
As he forced awkward eye contact.

The conversation was
Even more discomforted.
He was boring her
With the injury update
Of the city’s linebacker.

She sat still
Very proper
Attempting to be viewed
As the lady she was not.

He received the bill from the waitress
Giving her a flirtatious glance
Making his date jealous.

He checked the number on the bill
And fumbled through his pocket
For a wad of paper money.
He pulled out four 20’s
as nonchalant
As possible

At the curb outside
They said their goodbyes.
They lied
About seeing each other soon,
But neither one wanted to be
The one who gave up on
first.

They turned their separate ways,
Never to see each other
again.
