You say I’m not an athlete:
Because I don’t run a 5 minute mile,
I don’t sprint a 100 meters in under twelve seconds,
I can’t jump long distances,

Well I say you’re not an athlete
Because you don’t bench press over 150 pounds
You can barely squat the bar, let alone over your own body weight
You never knew the words “hang” and “snatch” can be used in the same sentence

You say I’m not an athlete-
Because I can’t dribble a ball?
I can’t shoot a three pointer?
I have to use an inhaler.

Well I say you’re not an athlete
Because you can’t propel yourself three feet on one leg, backwards
You think blocks are only used on the track
You can’t lift an eight-pound ball let alone throw it forty feet,

You say I’m no an athlete
Because I can’t hold my breathe for over a minute
I don’t know how to tread water
I can’t float,

Well I say you’re not an athlete
Because you can’t throw a discus 100 feet without moving
You don’t know how to spin to the front yet maintain perfect balance.
You can’t stand on your left foot.

You say I am not an athlete
Because I’m not under 140 pounds
I don’t refuse my body from proper nutrition
I love to eat

Well I say you’re not an athlete
Because you don’t understand how to eat
You are too concerned about body image
You forget you are a role model for under classmen

You say I am not an athlete
I say you’re not an athlete
Well, everything I suppose is a matter of perception
